How to use YouTube-Teachers to inspire your students

YouTube.com/Teachers was created to help teachers leverage video to educate, engage and inspire their students. Here you will find tips and tricks for bringing YouTube into the classroom, as well as an example of a lesson that includes inspirational videos. YouTube.com/Teachers is part of YouTube's larger educational initiative, YouTube EDU, featuring more than 700K educational videos created by leading experts and organizations such as PBS, TEDEd, and Khan Academy.

Lesson about Crime and Culture- Death Penalty

9^th grade, 15-16 years old Students

Time: 2 lesson of 45 minutes

Step 1

During this class, we will provide a better understanding into the field of Crime and Culture.

We will start by introducing the notion of Death Penalty and a short introduction.

After the notion is understood by the class, the teacher can start a voting session with open discussion.

Do you think Death Penalty is a good way of punishing crime? Why?

From our experience the results should be 50/50, this result will change though by the end of this class.

Step 2

After the voting session is over the teacher will hand in a reading paper with a short story about a young boy who is accused for killing his father and who is sentenced to Death Penalty due to his crime (12 Angry Men, the story of the young American boy who is accused for killing his father)

The teacher will talk about the incident with the students and ask for their opinion.

Take notes of new vocabulary words and explain.

Step 3

By the end of the talk the teacher will introduce the movie “12 Angry Men” from 1957 and mention that the story they have been reading is the plot from this movie where the jury is going to decide the faith of this young man.

This video is a short part from the movie in which the jury deliberate on the young boy’s faith. After voting and being all assured that the votes will be all “Guilty” someone voted “Not Guilty”.

This shows the students the important of being resistant to the peer pressure by supporting their own opinion and try to discuss more about the subject before they will take a decision.

The next video will be about how misleading details can influence the jury without them even questioning:

This video shows the important of questioning evidence and not taking them for granted.

The students will realize the important of supporting their opinion and not allow any source of manipulators.

The last video will be showing the students how a group of 12 people who voted “Guilty” in the beginning and who were very convinced about the case, ended up by changing their votes into “Not Guilty”

Step 4

Open discussion about the lesson emphasizing the importance of communication in such cases, how by discussing about the case can change a life. In fact, the jury found out that the child is not guilty, something that is very relevant when trying to deal with a Death Penalty Sentence.

Try to give more relevant examples of how the students can use this life lesson in their daily life routine.
